Johnny Headcase's Birthday
Johnny Headcase's Birthday by Ken MacGregor
Johnny took deep, calming breaths and shifted into a shooter’s stance, not for a moment taking his eyes off the wolf.
It was a huge animal, standing almost five feet at the shoulder. Its eyes caught the moonlight and seemed to glow from within. Its fur bristled with menace.
It was maybe forty feet away, growling, low and hungry.
Johnny drew his pistol from his shoulder holster, lightning fast.
The wolf ran alarmingly quick, closing the distance.
Johnny shot it, putting all fifteen bullets in its head, shoulders and chest.
It dropped, unmoving, at Johnny’s feet. Johnny reloaded and pointed the barrel down at the supine lupine. He waited.
Fifteen seconds passed. The wolf’s body slowly morphed into that of a naked human man. He opened one eye, grinned, and opened the other. “How was that?” he asked.
“Good,” Johnny said. “Thanks.”
The naked man sat up. “Sure thing. Happy birthday! What do you want to do next?”
